Mary Magdalene is one of the most fascinating and least understood individuals in the Bible, and the redefinition of this follower of Jesus has been all the rage in recent years. While this is in many ways an excellent account of Mary Magdalene’s life, I believe it goes too far, stating as fact things that are based on questionable sources, and really just taking too much liberty with the evidence. It also fails to adequately address one of the most controversial explanations for Mary’s supposed misunderstanding in the history of Christianity, mentioning but never really going into detail about the supposed schism that pitted Mary Magdalene and her followers against Peter and the Christian church.

Mary Magdalene has long been looked upon as a prostitute, and the video offers an effective defense to those charges, showing how Mary Magdalene has probably been confused with some of the other Marys as well as unknown women such as the prostitute who bathed Jesus’ feet in the house of Simon the Pharisee in Luke 7. However, as the video also points out, a charge of prostitution in the Biblical era could also imply a woman who gives her love too freely, and I think the jury is still out on this question. Mary would have had no reason to sell her body because, as this video explains, she was probably independently wealthy and thus free to live a nontraditional female life – she even served in some capacity as Jesus’ benefactor as he traveled the land spreading the Gospel.

The problem I have with this video is that it weaves back and forth between Biblical and apocryphal texts without identifying the source of many of its claims. Mention is made of provocative ancient texts discovered in Egypt in 1945, texts that imply Mary Magdalene and Jesus may have had a physical relationship (a charge most Biblical scholars strongly dispute), but references to such texts as the Gospel of Mary Magdalen and the Gospel of Philip are made without placing those works in their true apocryphal contexts – Protestants do not recognize these apocryphal books. Here, we are told – as if the facts are not in dispute – that Mary specifically did this and that after the death of Jesus, traveling far and wide as an evangelist and prophet, eventually ending up in France and, in the last three decades of her life, living alone out in the wilderness, fasting in a full-fledged return to nature and communing with the Lord and his angels up in the clouds. The Bible does not refer to Mary Magdalene after the resurrection of Jesus, and I cannot accept apocryphal accounts as certifiably true. The viewer is told that Jesus gave Mary Magdalene secret teachings that he shared with no one else, including his twelve disciples, but most claims along these lines come from apocryphal sources.

I was slightly disappointed and certainly surprised that the video did not go into much more detail concerning the history of the early Church. The jealousy of the disciples toward Mary can be found in the Bible, and by many accounts the early Christian church basically split between the respective followers of Mary Magdalene and Simon Peter. Some modern scholars, particularly feminists, like to make much hay of this, condemning the early church for its refusal to allow women a central role in the movement. This is alluded to but never really addressed in any detail here in this video. One of the interviewed historians seems to imply that the leadership of Mary Magdalene prevented the early Church from failing in its early days, but there is just very little information offered to back up many sweeping statements such as this. Too many times, no evidence of citation of source is offered up for provocative statements and theories, and the end result is a mishmash of ideas. I am coming at this topic from a Protestant viewpoint, and I was a little uncomfortable seeing so many ideas that Protestants do not accept put forth as fact; had the sources been fully vetted in the narrative, this would have been a much better biographical account, in my opinion.

I wish I had looked at the producer of this documentary before watching it. A&E has got to be one of the worst documentary producers in existence. This is no exception.

This documentary is about Mary Magdalene, one of Jesus Christ’s followers. It contains some Biblical information, some from the Nag Hammadi texts, some from fictional accounts, and a whole lot of speculation.

One of my biggest problems with this documentary was that they never gave the sources from which various details in Mary Magdalene’s life came from. During the narration, this would have be helpful to them in arguing their point. There is way too much speculation for my taste. Nearly half of the documentary is speculation based on a few bits of information.

They also never established whether the Nag Hammadi texts were reliable or not. They just assume that they are authentic and reliable. No mention that they date from the 2nd – 3rd century C.E., no mention of why they were rejected by early Christians, most of these texts are pseudographs (like a few of Paul’s letters), written in Coptic, not mention of their completeness, etc.

There is also only a few quotation from the Gnostic texts throughout the whole documentary! Less than three if I remember correctly! If you’re trying to derive information from text, at least quote from the documents! At least make an attempt to back the claims up.

Another problem was that they seemed to accept as fact, the end part of Mary Magdalene’s life, as mentioned in a Medieval legend book concerning the live of Christian saints, “The Golden Legend.” I had never heard of the “Golden legend” but after listening to their quotation from it, it should be obvious that that portion concerning Mary Magdalene was a product of medieval European society (Mary Magdalene receiving last rites? Last rites evolved in later centuries in the Roman Catholic Church. They didn’t exist in the first century C.E. It’s clearly the writer imposing his current belief system onto a earlier time period.)

At least they managed not to bungle the fact that the Bible never says that the repentant sinner is Mary Magdalene (the repentant sinner is never actually named in this story).

I was disappointed by the organization. Yes. The stories artre all clearly listed on the box in alphabetical order, but they’re hard to find on the DVDs because they’re not organized in any particular way per DVD set.

For example. I LOVE Courduroy. They probably could have included the live action movie along with the two cartoon versions that more closely resemble the books. Instead.. they put a book called “Yo! Yes?” on the DVD… That starts out with two kids throwing a ball back and forth saying and one saying “You? … …. …. ” pointing to himself and tossing the ball and the other one responding “You? … … ….” …… hmmmm… not so educational. Not so interesting. Kind of a waste of space on the DVD. This particular DVD also has “Here Comes the Cat!” — which I had never heard of.

While skimming the DVDS, I thought I was getting jipped. 3-4 stories on each of the 16 DVDs doesn’t really come up to 100. Thats when I noticed they were counting sories they put in the DVD features as a special. I thought the features area was supposed to be for author comentaries… actual extras.. ?? Then.. The best part of this is that you actually only get 90 stories. 10 are also available in Spanish. If you’re not learning spanish.. Given that most DVDs currently come in English and Spanish— This was a little disappointing. AND misleading. I think that’s why I couldn’t find a list of stories included ANYWHERE.

The “read along” is really just captions. You can turn them on yourself.

You can’t skip their advertisement for the DVD set you already own. You can fast forward… but strangly, you are then able to forward past the main menu and end up watching something aweful.

That being said.. there are a few good ones on here. I haven’t really decided if it was worth buying as a set or if I should have purchased each one individually. I spent $50. I’m seeing some of the individuals selling used for as low as $1. (I don’t think I’d spend much more than $3 on each one as an individual). Resale value is low….

As a Reading Specialist and grandmother, I enthusiastically endorse the Scholastic Treasure of 100 Storybook Classics. First of all, they selected excellent books for children. Secondly, they utilized the illustration style of the originals, so the aesthetics of the books are clearly presented and preserved. Thirdly, the animation is well-done though not overdone. The pacing is slow, as when a book is read aloud. This gives the listener a chance to absorb the story, just as he or she would if the story were being read aloud. It even has the option to include the text on each page, if you have a blossoming reader. In fact, this is just about the equivalent of having someone read aloud great picture books for your child, while you do — whatever.

the cutiest little gay boy ninja with devil wings and most innocent smile. the show is cool too, with the love child of kakashi and sasuke (naruto), guy with a hat fettish, brave hero with phobia of riding in moving vehicles, makes for lots of laughs for what is setting up to be a sad story. have fun with this one we thought it was awesome.

I own all three of these titles, including Curse on BluRay. I like all three, though Flying Daggers a bit less than the other two. I’m not keen on a bundle-only option, but both Curse and Flying Daggers are available (from Amazon) on BluRay (both for about 1/3 the price of the bundle. Crouching Tiger still isn’t out on BluRay, so I can see some irritation if you only want that movie. That said, the bundle is a good deal if you liked Crouching Tiger and might like other movies in the same genre. My concern is whether the BR of Flying Daggers or (when it comes out) Crouching Tiger has more special features than the regular DVDs did. The special features on the Curse BR are pretty thin.

This is the only way to buy Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon on Blu-Ray in the U.S. The two other movies have been on Blu-Ray for over a year. Anyone interested in these movies probably already has those two. This set could be acceptable at half the price, or if Curse of the Golden Flower or House of Flying Daggers were new special edition releases. But at this price point, we’re paying full price for these older discs.

Just wanted to leave a suitable review for those that are trying to determine whether they should rob the current 15th edition if they already believe the 10th. Well, the transfer is powerful grand better than the abysmal one that was build on the 10th. The 10th anniversary edition transfer was a very lifeless one at best, a step down from the bare bones dvd that was first released by Live when they were calm around. The blacks in the Dogs’ suits were more gloomy grey and the overall sight was primitive. I was never positive if this was a creative choice or that it was simply screwed up. There was plenty of online debate when the disc came out as to the worth of it. This current transfer remedies all of that, the narrate is anamorphic, with rich colors, making the film study exactly like what I saw when I obsolete to search for it in the 90s. The 10th also, for some inexplicable reason, dropped a line of Mr. White’s dialogue (”I reflect he’s objective passed out”) but it is thankfully restored here. So if you want the most solid transfer of Reservoir Dogs ever on DVD, this is your prefer.

The extras, unfortunately, pale in comparison to the 10th, and this is why you’ll probably want to retain the 10th around if you’re a filmmaking fan. The 10th edition has a documentary interviewing most of the key players in the film as well as some priceless footage from Tarantino’s filmmaking lab workshops at Sundance where he (poorly) played Mr. White(!) These are all missing on the unusual 15th disc, but the original 15th disc carries over “Reservoir Dolls,” the torture scene played out by Reservoir Dogs action figures. The 15th also has retrospective commentaries by some of the cast and crew, 2 movie critics, and a film historian all on separate tracks while watching the movie. Rather though-provoking too. There are a couple of retrospective documentaries discussing the film’s impact on the cinema world. There are also deleted scenes carried over from the 10th, but other than that, mostly fodder to pick up you inflamed about Reservoir Dogs, including a short featurette about the unusual video game.

So, I recount I would recommend this double dip if you’re a hard-core fan of the film, especially with the satisfactory transfer. You can win it at Circuit City for $12.99 this week which is an generous effect for what you find, but I would have on to the 10th edition for the filmmaking extras which were not carried over. Oh, and if you’re into packaging, this is the best packaging I’ve ever seen. An aluminum gasoline can where the top comes off and the discs are inside in a colossal matchbook (I contain the matchbook is exiguous edition) . Sick and colorful.

Acting that will blow you away and characters that disgust you even though you’re drawn to liking what slight likeable piece of them remains.

Depraved criminals that are racist, sadistic and keenly luminous are somehow very human and compassionate on one hand and disturbingly unpleasant on the other.

This movie is not for those with primitive stomachs. Although the psychological element of awe is noteworthy stronger than anything you actually behold in this film, there are a couple of gory scenes that will scar your memory forever once you notice them… the type of deliberate, up halt & personal cruelty to another human being that surpasses the desensitizing we’ve been through by watching other violent scenes on tv and movies. The isolation of the movie taking plot almost entirely in one room makes even the most tame scenes un-nerving and uncomfortably intense.

Tim Roth’s performance is definitely the most piercing. Michael Madsen, Harvey Keitel, Chris Penn and the rest of the ensemble cast are also riveting.

You will never listen to the song “Stuck in the Middle With You” by Stealers Wheel the same draw again. A song I once really liked detached gives me the willies each time I hear it.

Forrest Gump is a rare movie that succeeded on all levels. It was a box office shatter ranking among the top five highest grossing movies of all time. But it was also a principal darling, garnering across the board praise and a truckload of awards. The movie became a cultural phenomenon, spawning cook books, quote books, a top ten soundtrack album and lines like “lifeless is as tiresome does” and “life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna gather” have permeated our dialect. The movie has a nostalgic, feel respectable vibe thanks to the dimwitted Forrest’s stagger through 60’s and 70’s touchstone events. Underneath all those warm feelings lies a darkness. Terrible things happen to impartial about everyone Forrest comes in contact with. His best friend Bubba is killed in Vietnam, his other friend Lt. Dan loses both his legs, his mother dies of cancer and his beloved Jenny dies of AIDS. Even the distinguished people Forrest comes across meet with concern, President Kennedy & John Lennon are assassinated, George Wallace is shot and Elvis Presley dies young. There are apt performances all around. Sally Field is feisty as Forrest’s mama, Mykelti Williamson is humorous as Bubba, Gary Sinese as Lt. Dan is a perfect rough edged foil to Forrest and Robin Wright as Jenny portrays the confusion that young people of the times felt perfectly. While all those performances are of high quality, Forrest Gump is Tom Hanks’ tour de force. He is utterly incandescent as Forrest. He is in virtually every scene of the movie and never once does he fail to astound. He becomes Forrest and makes you care what happens to him. Mr. Hanks deservedly won his second consecutive Best Actor Oscar for the role and cemented himself as the best actor of his generation and one of the best of all time.

Forrest Gump is one of the best film of all time. Definitely the best Zemeckis’s work so far and he has do so grand soul and depth to this 1994 Academy Award winning Best Describe. This movie portrays the life of a slow-witted character who gets embroiled in various ridiculous situations. He was a Vietnam war hero, received a congressional medal of honour, shook hands with many US Presidents and was a successful owner of a small company. We catch to peep many world events through the eyes of a supposedly “dreary” character. The whisk and swagger of the movie was perfect as we prance through various historical events like the Vietnam War, assasination of JFK and the Watergate Scandal. Tom Hanks gave an undeniably fabulous performance as Forrest and truly deserves the Oscar that he earned. Gary Sinise gave a pleasant performance as Lieutenant Dan in the movie. Even though he was only nominated and did not acquire anything, I felt he really deserves the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. The scene where he pulled Forrest down from the bed and cursed him for saving his life, fair simply blew me away. Sally Field is also extraordinary as Forrest’s mother and deserves the Oscar as well. The line “Forrest, you have to do your best what God has given you. Be plucky Forrest, be heroic in everything you do. Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you gonna pick up.” really moved me and brought me tears. No movie had bring such emotion in me. Robin Wright did her role well as Forrest’s care for interest and complements well to Forrest’s life. The actors truly brings the characters to life and I must salute Zemeckis for choosing the perfect cast. The technical aspect of the film is unbiased superior. The visual effects is unlike anything we have seen before. Many movies have not fully utilised the CGI effects to complement it. Nowadays, filmmakers unprejudiced want to explain what special effects they can do rather than what the special effects can do for the film. In Forrest Gump, visual effects are utilised to their best to develop wonderful scenes. Scenes like the flying feather, Lieutenant Dans’ missing legs, Vietnam War, meeting of the president is impartial extraordinary. This is what visual effects is all about. To acquire impossible scenes to the great camouflage. Alan Silvestri’s film catch is one of the best scores I have ever heard. From the touching piano part at the beginning feather scene to the uplifting tune of Forrest hugging Jenny at the Washington square scene, Alan’s award-winning earn truly brings the perfect mood and emotion to the film. Every aspect of this movie is simply righteous from the eye-popping special effects, film editing, unbelievable catch, sound, to the theme of the movie. This movie makes us realised that we all have a purpose in life and that we all have the ability to do the impossible. Forrest Gump tells us that we all should have strong principles and beliefs to succeed in life. Forrest only believes in 3 person. He believes in God, his momma and Jenny. Nothing can go past them. Honest seek at what Forrest has achieved. He is the President of a minute company, a war hero, a Ping-Pong champion, and a gay father. Forrest Gump simply tells us that we can do anything in life as long as we set aside our best wretchedness and bear in everything that we do. Forrest Gump is no doubt one the best films I have ever seen. It changes my perception of life and makes me realised that we all have a purpose in this world. We probably won’t be seeing anything like this forever. A lawful masterpiece.

The days of paying an arm and a leg for G1 Transformers episodes are over. Yell! Factory, LLC, in conjunction with Hasbro, has released the complete first season of Transformers: The Recent Series, and it’s a kindly product! It’s also at a suitable stamp, which those who have paid extremely high prices for earlier releases (such as myself) are positive to like.

Packaging: 4 out of 5

It would have been nice if the packaging received the royal treatment that the unique He-Man and She-Ra cartoons received; however this is not so awful. Neat, new artwork printed on a metallic coating gives the box a highly dazzling and current look; the discs are safely encased in two slim DVD cases (made of soft, shatter-resistant polypropylene), each of which boasts 2-sided artwork visible through the sleeves and the translucent packaging.

Integrity To The Current Episodes: 5 out of 5.

These are the episodes the intention I remember seeing them; on VHS tape from my local video store, with a high level of faithfulness to the unusual sound and visuals. Those familiar with the Rhino releases earlier this decade may be overjoyed to hear that the *original* soundtrack is presented here (remixed in stereo) without any additional sound effects. Care has also been taken to reconstruct the show’s visuals; “Heavy Metal War” in particular has been restored to its current greatness, after a painful stint on the Rhino collection, on which the episode was marred by poorly-chosen takes replate with visual errors.

Episode quality and encoding: 4 out of 5.

Each DVD is 7.6 GB in size, and every byte appears to be taken in a high-quality encode of these episodes. Bit rate (a strong determinant of quality on standard DVD) varies from around 4800kbps to impartial over 6000 kbps during playback. The encoding is not perfect; an observant leer will peruse compression artifacts display up often on backgrounds and matte paintings; thankfully, characters and tantalizing scenes note up with about as remarkable clarity as the transfer probably allowed.

Special features: 3 out of 5 stars

The extras are fully contained on disc 3 of this collection, which I like because it leaves primary place on the other two discs for high-quality episode encoding. However, the features approach up a bit short in my view. Though the 20-minute documentary is all-new, it is not as thorough as I hoped it would be or as the packaging suggests. Also this documentary lacked any contribution from the unique exclaim actors, whose involvement strikes me as famous for a five-star special features disc. A printable copy of the “Transport To Oblivion” script (also available on the aging Rhino relase), three Hasbro toy commercials and one PSA (Public Service Announcement) invent up the reminder of this light special features piece. Hopefully Scream! Factory will continue to release the novel series on DVD, in which case there are tall opportunities for further special features.

All in all, this is a vast product at a huge label, and bears the closest resemblance to the new broadcast episodes I have seen thus far. Looking forward to future relases, possibly someday on Blu-Ray.

A lot of us grew up on the Generation One or G1 Transformer’s long before a live action film about giant transforming robots could have been opinion possible. The animation may not have been the best on this series but in the eighties it’s all we needed and our active imaginations filled in the rest. Despite the older less impressive animation these episodes are composed classics to those who remember them and will be more appetizing for most of us than the many spinoffs that followed the G1 series. There was something innocent about the series here, maybe because it was so early before the fact that each episode was really objective a half hour commercial became celebrated knowledge, maybe because here they actually looked like robots in disguise, but maybe unprejudiced because they are the ones most of us grew up on and where the whole lasting franchise found it’s niche.

Fans should be very enraged to believe these episodes in a unique more affordable area. The state is being build out by Yell! Factory and they have always done an kindly job of providing fans with a lot of well done special features on long awaited sets. This state was originally announced as having a few special features included with more possibly in the works but I’m very jubilant to observe the amount that they have now announced for it and have updated this review to include them. Alot of people who didn’t bewitch the more expensive modern sets are going to be exasperated at the chance to earn this one and I know that I can’t wait. I originally gave this station 5 stars impartial for the opportunity to occupy these classic episodes in a capable DVD status, but after hearing that they will in fact be restored to new broadcast versions with a unique stereo soundtrack created from the current audio I’m more wrathful than ever.

Some may say that this series was impartial the next step in a spacious advertising campaign for children’s toys but those of us who grew up being entertained by it know that there truly is more to this series than meets the examine. Thanks For Your Time.

The Mack (1973), probably one of the most referenced movies in the hip hop culture, on appearance has all the qualities of a blaxploitation film, but a closer and thoughtful behold might give you a different notion. Directed by documentarian Michael Campus and starring Max Julien, Richard Pryor, and Carol Urge, The Mack presents a portrait taken in time of a particular lifestyle not many ever obtain to behold.

The movie opens with two men, Goldie (Julien) and Slim (Pryor), enthusiastic in a gunfight in a junkyard. Seemingly out numbered, Goldie tells Slim to seize off (wouldn’t have been my choice as Slim is sporting what appears to be a M16 while Goldie’s sporting a handgun) . Slim manages to split, while Goldie gets picked up by the police, and subsequently sentenced to five years in a penitentiary. Serving some particular hard time, Goldie gets released, and tries to set the pieces aid together. He visits his brother, Olinga, played by Roger E. Mosley (Magnum P.I.), who is interested in trying to educate and empower the community, in a character fashion after Shaded Panther leader Huey Long. Basically. Goldie is presented with two options; follow his brother in focusing on making a incompatibility through psuedo-political means, or follow the path of the Mack, becoming a flesh peddler, and gaining empowerment through the acquisition of money. Goldie chooses the latter, hooking attend up with Slim and taking advice from an older blind man, sort of a Obi Wan Kenobi of the underworld, who shares his knowledge with Goldie on how to deal with women in the Mackin’ game, the importance of controlling their minds rather than unbiased their bodies. Goldie soon recruits some ladies of the night, and has to deal with foul police detectives, rival players, and various other underworld characters during his meteoric rise (he gets chosen as The Mack of the Year at an annual players ball) . As Goldie’s popularity, or notoriety, increases, so does the pressures, both internal and external, along with the violence, and begins carrying over into his family, and forces Goldie to resolve where it’s at…

The Mack certainly does seem to glorify these men who deal in the flesh trade, with their extravagant lifestyles, flashy cars, and spacious wads of cash, but the glamour is expeditiously overshadowed by the harsh realities presented as the stories progresses, and honest how noteworthy one has to give up to be a success in that particular business. There are a lot of laughs to be had here, maybe not intentional, but the film is gorgeous dated. Between the dialog, stereotypes, and trash-talking criminals, there was an underlying sadness for me in the realness of the disgusting attitudes depicted towards the women, objectified to the point where they weren’t even people anymore, merely tools of the trade, a means to obtaining material possessions through the sale of their bodies, and also how many see up to these men, idolizing them, thus perpetuating their activities. Shot on position in Oakland, and featuring trusty individuals within the community, the film forgoes the slickness of a Hollywood budget, but gains a precise grittiness one wouldn’t be able to reproduce on a soundstage. The dialog, a lot of it improvised, and some indistinguishable, only adds to the realistic quality of the film, but also isolates it, in my thought, within the time period in which it was made. The funniest share had to be when Goldie had his women at a planetarium, using the effects of the simulated stars and a microphone to subliminally enforce his will through their repetition of his player mantras. I did like how the film ended, nicely book ending the beginning, bringing the main character chubby circle.

Presented here is a very kindly looking wide conceal version of the film, which runs approximately 110 minutes. Special features include an new theatrical trailer, a commentary track featuring star Max Julien, producer Harvey Bernard, director Michael Campus, and actors Richard Anthony Williams, Annazette Stir, Don Gordon, and George Murdok, along with an first-rate 38 microscopic featurette titled Mackin’ Ain’t Easy, which looks abet on the making of the film, detailing all the problems and issues that arose, especially those filming on area within Oakland in the early 70’s. To some extent, I found this almost more appetizing than the movie.

The Mack is probably my common blaxploitation film ever. It gives detailed insight into life as the godfather of pimps on the hard streets of Oakland in the 70’s. Goldie gets released from prison and immediately begins working his master conception of becoming the biggest pimp-style baller in the oaktown. But his brother is one of the leading activist against exploiting dusky people to gain money. The sub-plot helps magnify the reality of being a successful dark man in a white world. If you like “Superfly”, “Sad Caesar”, or “Shaft” then you’ll appreciate The Mack.

Here’s a movie for dog lovers, the elderly, children of divorce, FOBs (Friends of Birds), dilapidated Boy Scouts, people yearning for adventure, and anyone who has ever loved… and lost. Up is for everyone. It made me laugh out loud, and it made me yowl.

I concept it would be tough for Up to match the emotional power of Wall-E. The two Pixar films are similar in their lack of dialogue in the first act, which helps deepen the emotional impact. Up begins with Carl, a paralyzed young boy star-struck by a noted explorer; and kookie Ellie, who has a similar obsession. The two kids become speedily friends, and jabber to one day move to Venezuela’s Paradise Falls. After getting married, they consume their dream home and fix it up, hoping to beget it with children. Carl and Ellie’s life together from childhood through customary age is depicted, silently, with delicacy and subtlety. The first 15 minutes is like a celebration of a jubilant marriage, and you truly feel Carl’s injure when he is left alone. He sits slumped in his chair, talking to the house as if it is the missing Ellie.

When developers end in on Carl’s beloved home, he decides to fulfill his promise to Ellie and recede to Paradise Falls. A customary balloon vendor, Carl lifts his home with hundreds of intellectual balloons. Stowing away on the porch is Russell, a tubby, valiant kid trying to derive a scouting badge.

After landing in Paradise Falls, the former man and the small boy are joined by a golden retriever named Dug who can talk with his collar, and a mountainous rare bird that bonds with Russell (he names her “Kevin”) . Dug is priceless: spot-on for every dog that ever lived, including an obsession with squirrels. Through a series of conclude calls and adventures, the quartet vanquishes a villain, saving the day. And Russell earns his scouting badge.

In the process, Carl learns to let go of his black mourning for Ellie, and live life again. When this happens, a truly magical thing happens. Before, Carl’s craggy face is gray and monochromatic. At the moment of his transformation, Carl’s face is awash in color, and he is surrounded by aesthetic hues. It reminded me of The Wizard of Oz, when Dorothy steps out of her gray world and into a candy-colored Munchkinland. Carl, too, enters a whole recent world.

Up is a deeply emotional film, rotund of truth. It’s the year’s best film. Regain another triumph for Pixar.

Someday, Pixar is going to do it — they’re going to form an emotionally uninspiring, lackluster inspiring movie. But in the meantime, they’re unexcited putting out toothsome bewitching movies like “Up,” which defies the usual kid-movie conventions by starring a crotchety obsolete man. It’s a charming, fun dinky adventure yarn with flying dogs and balloon-powered houses, but underlying it is a bittersweet slight epic about loss and care for.

As a child, the panicked Carl Fredricksen bonded with the oddball Ellie over their shared esteem of adventure, the explorer Charles Muntz, and Paradise Falls. They later married, depart into their “clubhouse” together, and lived a long, sadly childless life together. When Ellie died, she had never fulfilled her dream of going to Paradise Falls.

Now crotchety, alone and harassed by a actual estate developer, Carl (Ed Asner) is finally ordered to a retirement home. But he isn’t going quietly — instead he attaches thousands of balloons to his house and floats it away toward South America. But he accidentally takes an alive to, naive Wilderness Explorer (a thinly-veiled Boy Scout) named Russell (Jordan Nagai) along for the waddle. Dreadful kid was objective trying to gain an “assisting the elderly” badge.

And the jungle inch to Paradise Falls turns out to have some surprising obstacles: a tremendous emulike bird that Russell names Kevin, a talking dog named Dug (”I am jumping on you, bird!”), and a mysterious dilapidated man who lives deep in the heart of the jungle. Turns out the ragged guy is very familiar to Carl — and to buy Kevin, he’s willing to sacrifice Carl and Russell.

Industry experts were babbling about how “Up” wouldn’t be as celebrated as the previous Pixar movies, because the protagonist is basically a crusty primitive coot. Well, shows what they know. It ended up becoming one of those classic movies that somehow appeals to all ages — while the humor and action appeal to children, adults can relish Carl’s treasure for his lost wife, and his uninteresting realization that he’s clinging to the past.

In fact, the first ten minutes are some of the most heart-tugging, quietly bittersweet scenes I’ve seen in a long time. Without a word, they exhibit all the ups and downs of a realistic marriage — joys, sorrows (Ellie’s inability to have children), growing dilapidated together, and finally loss.

But it’s not a depressing movie by any stretch — in fact, it’s like a childhood fantasy near to life, complete with a floating house suspended on hundreds of balloons, and biplanes piloted by a talking dog army.. Plenty of huge dialogue (”Do you want to play a game? It’s called Gaze Who Can Go the Longest Without Saying Anything.” “Chilly! My mom loves that game!”) and an action-packed climax in an ancient airship.

Ed Asner is absolutely perfect as ubergrouch Carl — crotchety, grumpy, and positive to fulfill his wife’s lifelong dream, but gradually realizing he’s clinging to the past. Nagai is equally perfect as Carl’s polar opposite: a naive, chattery Scout who is distinct to reunite Kevin with her baby chicks. And the utterly adorable Dug and the other dogs deserve special gawk. These creatures are utterly hilarious — they talk (”I hid under your porch because I esteem you”) and act the plot dogs would if they talked. Three words: cone of shame.

The two-disc edition is going to have some very nice extras, but once again people with regular-def DVDs are going to earn shafted because the Blu-ray edition will have a bunch of odd stuff. Grr. As for this one, there’s a digital copy, the director’s audio commentary, kinda-alternate-ending “The Many Endings of Muntz,” and the documentary “Adventure Is Out There” about the research for this movie.

There are also a pair of adorable bewitching shorts. “Partly Cloudy” has a much-abused stork having to stammer potentially obnoxious baby creatures from a kind but clueless cloud. And “Dug’s Special Mission” is a sort of backstory for the adorable Dug, explaining what the heck he was doing before he met up with Carl and Russell.

“Up” continues Pixar’s running tally of gloriously spellbinding, emotionally layered movies that the entire family can be pleased. With that, I have only one more thing to say… SQUIRREL!
